Floating Islands

Short drama 24 min. Writer, Director, Co-Producer. Premiered at Jaipur International Film Festival, 2019; Platinum Remy Award, Houston World Film Festival. Funded by BC Arts Council and SSHRC.  Distributed by 7 Palms Entertainment (U.S.) and VUCAVU (Canada)

Ava, a counsellor setting up a Pentecostal summer camp on a Northwest coast island, finds two fugitives from El Salvador who've wrecked their stolen boat while trying to reach the Canadian border. Over the course of a long day, Ava must decide whether she will -- or can -- help them.   Meanwhile, at her summer cottage, Reena and her son Greg spy on them with Greg's drone, and this conflict ends in calamity.  The film, shot entirely on Gambier Island, B.C., pits Ava's spiritual values against the maxims of organized religion and fear of the unknown.

Patricia’s recent fiction short, Floating Islands, demonstrates a director with extraordinary acumen. A powerful story around migration and the mistranslations of encounters with otherness, Floating Islands turns a contemporary social issue into a moving story with gorgeous cinematography, powerful visual metaphors and nuanced character development.
